Bath Organic Community Garden - Living Willow Sculptures
Where? Barth
When? 1st February 2003
What's it about? Creating living willow sculptures by planting willow "wands". The aim will be to create a variety of different forms in the shape of animals.
Where's it happening? Lower Common Allotments, Upper Bristol Road, Barth What will volunteers do? Decide (in small groups) what form of structure/animal to make. Clear turf, make out base and plant willow wands in position.
What to wear/bring: Warm waterproof clothing & footwear. Food to share.
What will be provided: Light refreshments will be available in the polytunnel. Tools and gloves. Health and safety instruction. First aider will be on hand to deal with any minor accidents.

Any restrictions? Children under 8 should be accompanied by an adult. Dogs are not encouraged, in any case must be kept on lead.

Bird Box Building

What's it about? Working with a group of 10 young volunteers to build 10 bird boxes to be installed around Bath City Farm. We will make several different sorts of bird boxes for various species of birds, ie. blue tits, robins, wrens, owls and other birds of prey.
Where's it happening? Bath City Farm, Kelston View, Whiteway, Bath What will volunteers do? Build bird boxes. Help to erect them at a later date, after they have been treated with environmentally friendly wood preserver.
What to wear/bring: Packed lunch, strong footwear, waterproofs.

Christmas Tree Shredding Event 2003
Where? Bristol
When? Sunday 12th January 2003
What's it about? To arrange a large woodchipper which will provide a free Xmas tree shredding service for the local area. The chippings will then be available to allotment holders to use as mulch. It also provides on hand education and advice about recycling.
Where's it happening? Horfield Allotments, Corner of Monk Road and Clevedon Road, Bristol What will volunteers do? Help people carry Christmas trees, answer questions from the public about recycling, cut larger branches off the trees so they can go through the shredder. Tidy up afterwards.
What to wear/bring: Sturdy shoes, gloves and make sure they wear weatherproof clothing.
What will be provided: Branch cutters, refreshments. Some gloves may be available.

Any restrictions? Children must be accompanied by an adult (Because there is dangerous equipment on site & lots of vehicles). Everyone is welcome.

Hedgelaying Weekend

Shirehampton Community Park

What's it about? The project is to plant a new hedgerow in a new Community Park alongside a border with a busy road. The project will be the first practical project in the Park and will be used to generate local interest in the Park within the local community.
Where's it happening? Shirehampton Community Park, The Portway, Shirehampton, Bristol What will volunteers do? Volunteers will plant a variety of small trees to make a linear hedgerow. They will then mulch the trees to protect them.

Millennium Tree Avenue

What's it about? To plant two trees, chosen specifically for their blossom, as part of a tree avenue in an area of public open space - Hartcliffe Millennium Green.
Where's it happening? Hartcliffe Millennium Green, Bishport Avenue, Hartcliffe, Bristol What will volunteers do? The volunteers will plant two small trees and ensure that they are supported properly with a stake and tie. They will then place mulch around the base of the tree.
What to wear/bring: Wellies.
What will be provided: Expert guidance, all tools, mulch and wellies.

Any restrictions? Volunteers will be pupils at the nearby primary school from year six. Between 6-8 pupils will be involved on the day. All pupils are children who have asked to be able to volunteer for work on Hartcliffe Millennium Green but have not been able to be accommodated.

What's it about? To cut back encroaching vegetation in order to maintain wildlife interest and encourage biodiversity in the Conservation Area.
Where's it happening? Goosard Bridge, Bristol Road, Paulton, Bristol What will volunteers do? Use loppers and secateurs to cut back vegetation in preparation for the removal of the roots at a later stage, or on the day if possible. Cut up and stack prunings.
What to wear/bring: Protective clothing, especially for head and arms (to protect from thorns); refreshments; protective gloves and goggles if you have them; extra secateurs and loppers.

Sustainable Source of Beansticks from Coppiced Hazel

What's it about? An unused area behind a children's play area on the allotment site is being planted with hazel whips to be managed as coppiced hazel to provide bean sticks. To encourage wildlife, we have included some spindle and purging buckthorn.
Where's it happening? Allotment Field, Cross Lanes, Pill What will volunteers do? Complete planting of hazel whips, water in and apply thick woodchip mulch; clear remaining area of site in preparation for planting next winter.
