Green Team - Woodland Management
Where? Newport
When? Wednesday 5th February
What's it about? To improve the wet woodland habitats of this LNR. Hazel will be coppiced to bring it back into sustainable use, supporting local red squirrel populations.
Where's it happening? Dixons Copse, Newport What will volunteers do? Working under ranger instruction, help to coppice trees and clear land. Access and fencing will also be examined.
What to wear/bring: Wear sensible clothing and sturdy footwear. Bring any food required.
What will be provided: Tools and training. Tea and coffee

Any restrictions? Under 16s must be accompanied by a responsible adult

The Woodshed Bird Box Making
Where? Newport
When? Saturday 15th February 2003
What's it about? Get primary school children together making bird boxes for their school wildlife garden
Where's it happening? Carisbrooke Primary School, Newport What will volunteers do? Volunteers will be given bird box wood to cut to spec. This will then be put together following a plan and the boxes will be fixed in suitable positions. Alternatives will be bat and bug boxes.
What to wear/bring: Warm, comfortable clothing. Food and soft drinks if required.
What will be provided: Tea/coffee, instruction, tools and materials

Any restrictions? All minors need adult supervision

Green Gym - Habitat Improvement at Medina Valley Centre
Where? Newport
When? Monday 17th February 2003
What's it about? Improving health through outdoor, practical group activities. The Medina Valley Centre is a charity running local education courses. We will be improving their habitat areas including ponds and woodland.
Where's it happening? Medina Valley Centre, Newport What will volunteers do? Clear ponds and cut back woodland. Create habitat piles.
What to wear/bring: Sturdy footwear and sensible clothing are a must. Bring food if required.
What will be provided: Tools and training. Tea/coffee

Green Gym Scrub Clearance at Haylands Recreation Ground
Where? Ryde
When? Monday 20th January 2003
What's it about? Trees need to be planted/reinforced and scrub cleared. Natural environments will be improved and community/volunteer health will be promoted through involvement in outdoor group activities.
Where's it happening? Haylands Recreation Ground, Ryde What will volunteers do? Volunteers will warm up and cool down. Activities will use some tools - safety training will be given - to clear scrub and plant trees. Tree protectors on existing trees will be checked and replaced if necessary. Paths and fencing around the nearby playground will be checked.
What to wear/bring: Sturdy footwear (no trainers), and sensible, comfortable clothing. Bring food if required.
What will be provided: Tea/coffee and light refreshments. Tools and safety training

Any restrictions? Under 16s must be accompanied by a responsible adult. No upper age limit - participants can do as much or as little as they like

Tree Planting
Where? Shalfleet
When? 18th January 2003
What's it about? Dutch Elm disease is destroying a lot of elm trees on the island, so we are cutting about 10+ down in the churchyard, and replacing them with live trees.
Where's it happening? Shalfleet Church, Shalfleet What will volunteers do? Help cut down trees then replant with other live trees.
What to wear/bring: Warm clothes, wellies/stout boots, hot drinks
What will be provided: Hot drinks, gloves, some tools
