Searching for the Marbled White Butterfly

What's it about? To involve local residents who back on to the railway, to look out for and report back any sightings of the rare Marbled White butterfly, recently seen in the area.
Where's it happening? Wigston Triangle, Leicester What will volunteers do? Regularly check their gardens and railway land visible from their properties for Marbled White butterflies. Report any sightings.
What to wear/bring:
What will be provided: A leaflet showing the butterfly and explaining why it is important will be distributed to all residential properties backing on to the railway.

Newt Pond Habitat Improvements
Where? Coalville
When? Tueday 14th January 2003
What's it about? Carry out reed control work on a pond which has Great Crested Newts, on a local nature reserve.
Where's it happening? Nature Alive, Coalville What will volunteers do? Pull reed from a pond. Leave it stacked close by to pond. Learn about newt habitats.
What to wear/bring: Sturdy footwear, warm clothes, waterproofs, lunch.
What will be provided: Minibus transport (9.30 Swadlincote Ski Centre, 10.00 Snibston Discovery Park, Coalville). Tools, training. Hot drinks, biscuits.

What's it about? We have a copse associated to the school that is need of management. We would need some volunteers to help "tidy it" and assist in its management. It is around 20 years old and requires some proper coppicing.

Environmental Garden

What's it about? To plant evergreen honeysuckle to cover red brick wall and to provide habitat for insects. Also to plant winter flowering jasmine to give some colour to site which is clearly visible from perimeter path.
Where's it happening? Westfield Junior School, Westfield Road, Hinckley What will volunteers do? Clear a small area for planting and affix plant training supports to the walls.
What to wear/bring: Suitable outdoor wear including footwear.
What will be provided: Electric drill, plugs, wire for plant training. Refreshment- drinks.

What's it about? Restock pond and monitor plant and animal growth regularly.

Coppicing at Blackbrook Reservoir

What's it about? To work with volunteers, coppicing willow around the edge of the local reservoir to encourage the diverse range of plants growing there.
Where's it happening? Blackbrook Reservoir (Grid ref: SK457177), Nr Charley Road, Shepshed What will volunteers do? Volunteers will learn to coppice willow - a traditional management technique, using bowsaws, loppers.
What to wear/bring: Sturdy footwear, waterproofs, warm clothes, lunch.
What will be provided: BTCV minibus transport from Swadlincote Ski Centre @ 9.30am and Snibston Discovery Park @10am. Also provide tools, training, hot drinks and biscuits.
