Village Green. Green-up

What's it about? We are a small coastal village to the north of Liverpool. We want to revitalise the village green for the benefit of the whole community and visitors. This will involve re-landscaping, replacing the seating, enlarging the borders and introducing more permanent planting. If successful in our grant application we will use the funding to help realise the latter 2 tasks.
Where's it happening? Hightown, Liverpool What will volunteers do? Cut away some of the existing grass to enlarge existing flower beds and create new ones. Prepare and condition the soil. Move a number of established shrubs. Plant new shrubs/herbaceous perennials
What to wear/bring: Suitable clothing. Refreshments. Gardening equipment
What will be provided: Soil conditioner. Fertilizer. New plants

War Memorial Facelift

What's it about? The memorial is a key focal point as you enter the village. We would like to reshape and plant the flower beds creating a mixture of permanent and seasonal planting. A local garden centre is producing a design for us.

Acorn Venture Farm
Where? Liverpool
When? Sunday 20th April 2003
What's it about? To get young volunteers to construct bat and/or bird boxes, half for the project and half for them to put up in an area near their own homes.
Where's it happening? Acorn Venture Farm, Depot Road, Kirkby, Liverpool What will volunteers do? Help build bat and/or bird boxes to put up in farm woodland and construct another to take home.
What to wear/bring: Clothing and footwear suitable for working on the site.
What will be provided: Access to refreshment facilities. Toilet and handwashing facilities.

Any restrictions? 8+ years due to nature of site. No animal allowed.

Grasmere Road Verges
Where? Liverpool Nr

What's it about? The verges along this lovely leafy lane are crying out to be planted with wildflowers. We would like to either sow a mixture of shady glade/hedgerow species or plant ready grown plants for a more instant effect. The local residents who have responsibility for maintaining the site have already cleared the verges of rubbish but would like our support with revitalising the habitat.
Where's it happening? Hightown, off A565 Liverpool to Southport, Liverpool Nr What will volunteers do? Dig over the verges and remove weeds that have grown over the winter. Prepare the soil for sowing or planting. Either sow pure wildflower seed mixture or plant ready grown plants
What to wear/bring: Suitable clothing. Refreshments. Gardening equipment
What will be provided: Wildflower seed mixture or ready grown specimens of various species

Completed Projects
Regeneration of Allotment Site
Where? St Helens
When? Saturday 8th March 2003
What's it about? To clear vacant allotments of all rubbish (broken glass, timber and all uncompostable materials) ready for us to start a project with local school children with learning difficulties.
Where's it happening? Pilkington Allotment Site, Alder Hey Road, St Helens What will volunteers do? Volunteers will be divided into various teams. The project will have three teams, each with a team leader. (1) Salvage and recycle team. (2) Broken glass team (to be managed by ex-Pilkington employee). (3) Disposal team.
What to wear/bring: Strong footwear. Spade and garden rake, etc.
What will be provided: Waste bins, cullet skips (for broken glass), various tools, refreshments/packed lunch.

Any restrictions? No small children or pets due the unsafe nature of greenhouses.

Keeping Our Local Beach Free From Debris
Where? Wirral
When? 2nd April 2003
What's it about? We're already cleaning the beach (since April 2002) and have so far filled four skips with rubbish and washed-up debris. We've decided to continue to clean the beach for the Marine Conservation Society.
Where's it happening? Thimstaton Beach on the Dee Estuary, Heswall, Wirral What will volunteers do? Pick up litter and debris along the length of beach we've adopted, charting everything and weighing the bags for the Marine Conservation Society.
What to wear/bring: Waterproof clothing, wellington boots or walking boots. Strong protective gloves. Clip board. Hot drinks and sandwiches.
What will be provided: Strong plastic bags. Extra picker-ups borrowed from the Wirral Rangers and the use of Landrover and trailer courtesy of the Rangers and Sailing Club. First Aid kit.
Is there wheelchair access to the site? No
Any restrictions? No, but need to be able to bend. Well-behaved dogs welcome.
