Whitbread Dormouse Boxes
Where? Welshpool
When? 13th April 2003
What's it about? To make dormouse boxes and site them in potential dormouse habitat.
Where's it happening? Tynllwyn, Llanfair Caereinion, Welshpool
What will volunteers do? Build dormouse boxes, put them up in hazel coppice. Look at small mammals living in the area.
What to wear/bring: A smile!
What will be provided: Tools, materials.

Whitbread Otter Holt
Where? Welshpool
When? 20th April 2003
What's it about? To make an artificial otter holt on the side of a brook used by otters.
Where's it happening? Gelli-Gethin, Llanfair Caereinion, Welshpool
What will volunteers do? Construct an artificial otter holt. Look for otter spraints and take them apart to see what the otter has been eating.

Clean Up Hay!

When? First dry day between 7th and 10th April 2003
What's it about? To do a litter pick around Hay-on-Wye town. As an Ecoschool we keep our school free of litter, but have noticed that our town is full of rubbish. We want to extend our eco-work to the local community.
Where's it happening? Town centre and river walk, Hay-on-Wye
What will volunteers do? Pick up rubbish in town.
What to wear/bring: Wellies or change of shoes, coats.
What will be provided: Gloves, litter pickers, bags.

Re-Connecting Agriculture - Aberhafesp Primary School

What's it about? An exploratory study of two wildlife habitats on a farm involving children from a local primary school.

What will volunteers do? The children will record the wildlife and othr physical characteristics of woodlands and wetlands of farm environment.
What to wear/bring: Snacks, wellies, waterproof clothing, pens, pencils, clipboards, overalls.

Woodland and Wetlands Survey - Caersws Primary School
Where? Newtown
When? 20th March 2003
What's it about? Engage key stage 2 children in an exploratory survey of two natural habitats, woodlands and wetlands, as part of an ecological study project with the Montgomeryshire Wildlife Trust.
Where's it happening? Caersws Primary School, Caersws, Newtown
What will volunteers do? Carry out a stream dipping activity to assess the health and physical features of the wetland. They will also be collecting minibeasts to assess the ecological health of the woodland and wetland. This information will be shared with the Wildlife Trust and used to help volunteers understand how to increase the wildlife value of these habitats.
What to wear/bring: Wellies, waterproof clothing, pens, pencils, clipboards, reference texts (keys & identification guides).
What will be provided: Equipment, first aid kit, leadership, health & safety assessments.

Aberhafesp Community Graden Bird Encouragment Project
Where? Newtown (nr.)
When? 10th March 2003
What's it about? To create nest boxes and a bird table for installation in the community garden which has been created to attract wildlife and to provide access for people to experience wildlife at first hand.
Where's it happening? Aberhafesp Primary School, Aberhafesp, Newtown (nr.)
What will volunteers do? Construct nest boxes and a bird table using wood and nails and fix boxes to trees in garden. Supervise and assist children taking part.
What to wear/bring: Protective eyewear (school can provide some), drill, jigsaw, pencils, rulers.
What will be provided: Hammers, saws, materials, risk assessment and safety talk.
Is there wheelchair access to the site? Yes
Any restrictions? Only open to children attending their school and their parents.

Wetlands Study - Llansantffraid Primary School

What's it about? Engage key stage 2 children in a study of wetlands near the school. Children are to record the wildlife and features of the wetlands as part of an ecological study project with the Montgomeryshire Wildlife Trust.
Where's it happening? Llansantfraid Primary School, Llansantffraid, Oswestry (nr.)
What will volunteers do? Carry out a pond/stream dipping activity to assess the health and physical features of the wetland.. A study of the water invertebrates will be used to determine the health of the wetlands.
What to wear/bring: Wellies, waterproofs, dipping nets and trays, magnifying pots/glasses.
What will be provided: Reference texts, some dipping equipment, leadership, health and safety risk assessment and first aid kit.

Whitbread Bird Boxes/Blychau Adar Whitbread

What's it about? Children from the 10 farming families which make up the 'Pontbren group' making nest boxes with the help of local experts. The plan is to make kestrel and owl boxes and nest boxes for smaller birds, and then site them within the area covered by the 10 Pontbren farms.

Whitbread Duck Nesting Raft
Where? Welshpool
When? 16th March 2003
What's it about? Members of the Pontbren families to construct a raft and anchor it in a pool on one of the farms ready for ducks to nest on safely.
Where's it happening? Melingrug, Llanfair Caereinion, Welshpool
What will volunteers do? Build a raft, plant rushes on it, secure a nesting box, and anchor the raft in a pool. Also look out for and try to identify birds in the area.
