What's it about? Extend the boardwalk through Forge Valley and to construct some steps making the area accessible to all users.

Acomb Wood Regeneration
Where? York
When? Saturday 19th April 2003
What's it about? Restore Acomb Wood by replanting lower level plants/hedges, litter picking, hazel coppicing and establish designated pathways planting wild flowers and involving local youth and community to avoid future vandalism.
Where's it happening? Acomb Wood, Acomb Wood Drive, York What will volunteers do? Litter pick, build habitat piles, plant hedgerow on wood perimeter, plant wild flowers, build bird boxes, assist with hazel coppicing.
What to wear/bring: Wear strong boots/shoes and old clothes. Bring a trowel or spade if you have one. Packed lunch.
What will be provided: All hedgerow plants, foxgloves and other suitable wild flower plugs, bird box kits, bow saws for hazel coppicing, light refreshment.

Oswaldkirk Footpath and Step Construction Day

What's it about? Teams of volunteers will be used to improve this footpath which provides public access to the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Where's it happening? Oswaldkirk Village, Helmsley (nr.) What will volunteers do? Practical work to clear and improve the footpath and provide steps and revetments to provide better access to the countryside.
What to wear/bring: Sturdy shoes/boots, warm waterproof clothes, a packed lunch.
What will be provided: Tools and equipment, instruction and supervision of work and provision of qualified first aiders. Transport to site from York (subject to space and prior booking), and tea and biscuits.

Brown Moor Vale Project
Where? Malton
When? 28th January 2003
What's it about? To manage an area of valuable chalk grassland by removing hawthorn scrub. This will promote the growth of wildflowers in the spring. Volunteers can do this using traditional hand tools.
Where's it happening? Brown Moor Farm, Leavening, Malton What will volunteers do? Use slashers and grasshooks to clear the scrub away. Bowsaws will be used to reduce the hawthorn to a manageable size.
What to wear/bring: Warm, old clothes; waterproofs; a packed lunch.
What will be provided: Refreshments, all tools and safety equipment, tuition and guidance.

Barlby Ponds Reedbed Management
Where? Selby
When? 18th February 2003
What's it about? The reedbed will be managed by removing encroaching vegetation to prevent the pond being 'choked-up'. Previous work at this site has resulted in it becoming a well-used nesting site for waterfowl.
Where's it happening? Barlby Ponds, Barlby, Selby What will volunteers do? Volunteers will be able to help both in the pond and on the banks as they wish. They will be able to help uprooting reeds, dragging them to the banks of the pond and removing them from the water into piles on the sides.
What to wear/bring: Warm, old clothes and waterproofs; sturdy footwear, eg. wellies; own lunch.
What will be provided: Tea, coffee and biscuits; waders; limited number of waterproofs; all necessary tools and safety equipment; transport from York office for up to 13 volunteers.

Fence Building

What's it about? To provide a fence to protect a hawthorn hedge round burial ground from vandals and livestock.
Where's it happening? Quaker Burial Ground, The Retreat, Heslington Road, York What will volunteers do? Volunteers will be involved in all aspects of fence building and as a result, will learn new skills which they can use in their communities or employment.
What to wear/bring: Warm clothes, study footwear and waterproofs. Packed lunch. No experience necessary.
