The Scotalot Raised Bed Herb Garden

What's it about? We are developing our new school allotments project and creating raised beds in part of the garden with easy disabled access. We will create a lovely herb garden and call it the Whitbread Action Earth Herb Garden.
Where's it happening? The Whitemoor Allotments, Wilkinson Street, Whitemoor, Nottingham What will volunteers do? Prepare the soil and plant and label the herbs in the raised bed.

Our Heathland Butterflies
Where? Ollerton
When? 15th April 2003
What's it about? Most heathland in Nottinghamshire has disappeared and with it a lot of wildlife, including butterflies. We need to know which butterflies still exist on the remaining heathland.
Where's it happening? various sites in the Sherwood Forest and Ollerton areas of Nottinghamshire, Ollerton What will volunteers do? Visit heathland sites to see if they are suitable for butterflies, and to find out which species are actually present. Results will go to Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust and to Butterfly Conservation.
What to wear/bring: Stout footwear, refreshments.
What will be provided: Guidance on carrying out surveys, feedback on how results can be used for better butterfly conservation.

Where? Blidworth

What's it about? To encourage community spirit by entering our village in the Britain in Bloom competition.
Where's it happening? Residential areas within the village, Blidworth What will volunteers do? Help with the renovation and improvement of existing roadside flower beds. In the longer term, they will help maintain flowers, sweep litter and assist elderly residents with the care of their gardens.
What to wear/bring: Gloves and wellington boots. Refreshments.
What will be provided: Gardening equipment and flowers; guidance; advise from professional landscape gardener.

What's it about? In order to redress the balance for the loss of hedgerows, we will be inviting volunteers to learn how to take spring cuttings of locally gathered hawthorn and hazel.
Where's it happening? Diamond Avenue Tree Nursery, Kirkby-in-Ashfield What will volunteers do? Take cuttings to replenish and create new hedgerows.
What to wear/bring: Suitable clothing.
What will be provided: Risk assessment and safety plan; first aid cover; all tools and materials needed; tea, coffee and biscuits; protective gloves.

Where's it happening? Dukes Wood Museum and Nature Reserve, Newark (nr.) What will volunteers do? Fill in holes in access road with supplied tarmac material. Rake out dykes to pond in the reserve.

Healthy Harvest Café
Where? Nottingham
When? Tuesday from 21st Jan - 18th March 2003
What's it about? Ecoworks has a catering trailer and a large allotment site where we grow lots of organic food. We work with a variety of disadvantaged group and we want to be able to park the catering trailer on the allotment site so that meals can be created using the freshly picked produce and served to our volunteers and garden project workers. We need to erect some gates and remove a short portion of the allotment hedge in order to achieve this end.
Where's it happening? Hungerhill allotment site, St Anns, Nottingham What will volunteers do? Work on constructing gates out of wood and clearing the ground and removing the hedge, making cups of tea and toast will be essential.
What to wear/bring: Warm and durable clothing, packed lunch
What will be provided: Gloves and wellington boots can be provided. Hot drinks
