Catcott Heath Nature Reserve Improvements
Where? Catcott
When? Sunday 5th February 2003
What's it about? To extend fen meadow area to encourage marsh fritillary butterfly. This will be achieved by selective tree felling to reduce water loss, by cleaning internal ditches by raking out debris and by cutting purple moor grass. Wood to be cut/chipped for improving access ways.
Where's it happening? Higher Ropes Drove, Catcott What will volunteers do? Fell trees and cut to 2m lengths using bowsaws. Clean debris from ditch using ditch rakes. Burn brash. Lay 2m lengths as "corduroy" paths.
What to wear/bring: Lunch, protective (rain) clothing, wellingtons or walking boots.
What will be provided: Training and supervision, hot tea/coffee, tools, first aid box/first aider.
Is there wheelchair access to the site?
Any restrictions? Under 12s must be accompanied by adult. No pets.

Street Heath Reserve - Improving Butterfly Glades
Where? Glastonbury
When? Sunday 16th March 2003
What's it about? Eliminating bramble and birch regrowth from glades to encourage more flora beneficial as food plants for butterflies and caterpillars.
Where's it happening? Street Heath Reserve, Glastonbury What will volunteers do? Cut bramble with slashers, clear birch regrowth with bow saws and loppers. Move cut trunks to form drinking platforms for grazing ponies.
What to wear/bring: Lunch, waterproof clothing, wellingtons or walking boots

Sharpham Moor Reserve - Modifications to Allow Grazing
Where? Glastonbury (nr.)
When? Sunday 2nd March 2003
What's it about? Clearing brambles, pollarding alders and altering ditch alignment to provide water for ponies.
Where's it happening? Sharpham Moor Reserve, Sharpham, Glastonbury (nr.) What will volunteers do? Dig out ditch with spades, pollard alders using bow saws, clear bramble with slashers and petrol-driven brushcutter. Burn brash.
What to wear/bring: Lunch, waterproof clothing, wellingtons/walking boots.
What will be provided: Training and supervision, hot tea/coffee, tools, first aid box/first aider.

Grayfield Wood

Westhay Moor N.N.R - Drove Preservation

When? 16/02/03
What's it about? Pollarding willows and bundling branches to use to shore up banks of a 10 acre lake to minimise wave erosion of the access drove. Brambles need clearing to get access to willows.
Where's it happening? off B3151 South of Wedmore - Grid Ref St 452 444, Westhay, Somerset What will volunteers do? Clear brambles using slashers, pollard willows using bow saws, tie cut branches into bundles, place bundles in water at lake edge to minimise wave erosion.

Improving Heath Edge for Butterflies

What's it about? Coppicing scrub edge and clearing brambles adjacent to open heath.
Where's it happening? Langford Heathfield, Langford Budville, Taunton What will volunteers do? Coppice hazel using bowsaws and stack brash over stools to prevent deer damage. Clear brambles using slashers.
What to wear/bring: Packed lunch and hot drink. Working boots or wellingtons, waterproofs, warm old clothing.

Improving Marsh Harrier Breeding Site
Where? Westhay
When? Saturday 5th January 2003
What's it about? Improve habitat to encourage return of marsh harriers, which bred 1995-2000, by some tree thinning and selective clearing of reed beds.
Where's it happening? Westhay Heath Nature Reserve, Westhay What will volunteers do? Remove specified trees with bowsaws, trimming off brash and stacking 2m length timbers. Clearing reed patches and raking off cut reed.
What to wear/bring: Lunch, protective clothing, wellingtons or walking boots.
What will be provided: Training and supervision, hot tea/coffee, tools, first aid.
