Rhododendron Clearance, Baggar Wood
Where? Barnsley
When? 22nd April 2003
What's it about? To clear thickets of invasive rhododendron to help a woodland return to native oak woodland.
Where's it happening? Baggar Wood, near Silkstone, Barnsley
What will volunteers do? Thin the encroaching rhododendron to reduce competition for other woodland species.
What to wear/bring: Packed lunch, waterproofs. Wear old, warm clothes and strong footwear.
What will be provided: Drinks, treats and biscuits during breaks and lunchtime. Trained leaders to demonstrate the work, and tool use. Health & safety advice, emergency first aid cover. Volunteer travel expenses/travel. Tools and personal protective equipment.
Is there wheelchair access to the site?
Any restrictions? Must be able to follow instructions for health and safety reasons. Under 16s need parental consent. People with special needs and their support workers are welcome.

Friends of Whinfell Quarry Gardens Revitalisation

What's it about? Manage and clear the gardens which have been neglected. Re-plant where plants have died.
Where's it happening? Whinfell Quarry Gradens, Whirlow, Sheffield
What will volunteers do? Clear and sweep paths, remove dead wood, plant designated areas.

Dry Stone Walling at Whitley Edge
Where? Crow Edge nr
When? 27/02/03
What's it about? We aim to repair Dry Stone Walls; clear old Gorse to promote new growth; and dig on order to create a wetland habitat for birds such as Snipe.
Where's it happening? Whitley Edge, Crow Edge nr
What will volunteers do? Volunteers will carry out Dry Stone Walling, Gorse clearance and Wetland Scrape digging; after leaders have explained the project, the reason for the task and how to do each task.
What to wear/bring: Volunteers need to bring a packed lunch and wear old warm clothing and strong footwear. If possible volunteers should bring waterproofs.
What will be provided: We will provide hot drinks and biscuits at breaks and lunchtime. We will provide trained leaders to demonstrate the work and tool safety. We will provide fully maintained, safe tools and personal protective equipment. We also provide transport.

Bulb Planting on Village Pond

What's it about? To plant spring bulbs on the grass surrounds of the village pond with a view to increasing our marks in the "Yorkshire in Bloom Campaign"

What's it about? To increase the area of wetland plants on Clayton Millennium Green and to add a greater variety of plants, creating more interest and encouraging more wildlife to this area of our village.

What will volunteers do? The volunteers will be village children who will prepare the wet area surrounding the pond and plant the marshland plants under the supervision of committee members.

What will be provided: Administrative skills and horticultural knowledge; heavy labour for cleaning the area; refreshments in the village hall.

Whinnswood Pond Improvement

What's it about? In accordance with its management plan, volunteers to remove vegetation from the pond.
Where's it happening? Sheffield
What will volunteers do? Use spades, buckets, mattocks and chromes to clear out the silt and vegetation, opening up a larger area of clear water as a result.
What to wear/bring: Old clothes, waterproofs, packed lunch.

Westways Wildflower Meadow
Where? Sheffield
When? Tuesday 1st April 2003
What's it about? Sowing a wildflower meadow (approximately 50 square metres) by parents and 30 children, aged five and six, at Westways Primary School. The seed mix is specially blended from native and non-native hardy annuals to produce a sheet of dramatic colour, be long flowering and attract a variety of insects to the garden.
Where's it happening? Westways Primary School, Mona Avenue, Sheffield
What will volunteers do? Three parents members of the Westways Wildlife Garden Group will measure the site into square metres and supervise the children, working in groups of four, in measuring out seed, mixing it with sand, sowing and raking the seed in. Each child will sow at least one square metre of meadow.
What to wear/bring: Wear suitable clothing for gardening
What will be provided: Seed, sand, rakes, metre canes, seed measures, container to mix seed and sand together.
