Woodland Work Party
Where? Bury St Edmunds
When? 16/02/03
What's it about? Taking our cub scouts (8-10 year old) to a nature reserve where they can take part in some practice reserve management (we will be clearing old and dead wood into piles and burning it, restoring the habitat etc. Also they will learn about the reserve and wildlife there and have a tour of the reserve. This is part of their global conservation and naturalist badges.
Where's it happening? Lackford Lakes, Suffolk Wildlife Reserve, Lackford, Bury St Edmunds
What will volunteers do? Help with some practice management on the reserve. This will be with the reserve wardens and adult cub leaders. Work to be done is to collect and cut down dead wood from an area of the reserve and to then burn it.
What to wear/bring: Warm clothing, boots and wellingtons, food and drink for the morning
What will be provided: Protective Gloves, Transport to the reserve

Woodland Work Party
Where? Bury St Edmunds
When? Sunday 9th March 2003
What's it about? Take our cub scouts to a nature reserve to take part in practice management work on the reserve with the warden as part of their naturalist and Global Conservation badges.
Where's it happening? Bradfield Woods, Suffolk Wildlife Trust Reserve, Bury St Edmunds
What will volunteers do? Help the warden with hedge making used to keep deer out of recently coppiced areas. Tour/walk of the reserve, possibly putting up birdboxes that the boys have made.
What to wear/bring: Refreshments, warm scruffy clothing, boots or wellies.
What will be provided: Transport to reserve, adult supervision, food at the end.
Is there wheelchair access to the site? No
Any restrictions? No pets allowed on reserve.

Tree Nursery for Elmswell
Where? Elmswell
When? Sunday 30th March 2003
What's it about? Elmswell Community Wood started 2 months ago. Our aim is to establish and maintain a community woodland for the village of Elmswell. The tree nursery will be our first project and will officially launch the organisation.
Where's it happening? Elmswell Memorial Library, Cooks Road, Elmswell
What will volunteers do? There will be an appeal in the village newsletter for suitable tree/shrub seedlings. Volunteers will bring their seedlings, register species etc. and help plant them in the new nursery.
What to wear/bring: Suitable outdoor clothing, hand trowel/fork.
What will be provided: We will identify/register any seedlings brought.

Bat Boxing Day
Where? Ipswich
When? 16th January & 20th February 2003 (construction), 23rd February 2003 (erection of boxes)
What's it about? To construct approx 30 bat boxes and place them in a proposed local nature reserve on the outskirts of Ipswich.
Where's it happening? Ashground Plantation, Bobbits Lane, Ipswich
What will volunteers do? Construct wooden bat boxes and (risk assessment allowing) attach them to suitable trees.
What to wear/bring: Warm, waterproof clothing, stout shoes, refreshments.
What will be provided: Tools, materials for boxes, safety equipment (hard hats, gloves), tea/coffee, ladders, box plans and instructions.

Tree Warden Day
Where? Saxmunelham,
When? 29 March 2003
What's it about? We have decided to host a day training and information for tree wardens in this area. There will be discussion/ training in Peasenhall Village hall in the morning, with a visit to one of the hedges we would have planted.
Where's it happening? 3 Wood View, Sibton, Saxmunelham,
What will volunteers do? Receive training and information on planting and pruning trees and hedges.
What to wear/bring: suitable clothing, wellies if wet.
What will be provided: We will provide tea/coffee, snacks and possibly lunch

Any restrictions? As long as they are volunteer tree wardens or about to become a tree warden.

Village Tree Planting

What's it about? Plant trees in the village as part of our cub scout spring programme.

What will volunteers do? Help dig the holes, plant the trees and secure the stakes as necessary.
What to wear/bring: Warm scruffy clothing, boots or wellingtons.
What will be provided: All trees, stakes, tools.

Bird Box Building
Where? Vicarage Lane
When? 12/02/03
What's it about? The Cub Scouts will be making boxes to put up in local nature reserves or in the village. This part of their DIY World Conservation and Naturalist badge work.
Where's it happening? 1st Acton & Walding Field Cub Scout, Acton Primary School, Vicarage Lane
What will volunteers do? Help construct the boxes from scratch over two weeks under the supervision from adults working in teams to achieve this.
What to wear/bring: Their Cub Scout uniform
What will be provided: Wood, and all materials required for constructing boxes

Bird Cakes for Wild Birds

What's it about? To educate the younger members of the community to identify birds and learn about how to make bird cakes to help the birds find food during the winter. (Enlarging our environmental project to educate parishioners about their natural environment)

What will volunteers do? Learn how to make bird cakes for wild birds. Learn to identify different species that will come to feed.

Wild Bird Feeders
Where? Woodbridge

What's it about? To try to educate and encourage youngsters to think about wild birds and their plight during the winter months. The youngsters will construct bird feeders from wood and wire mesh. A speaker has been invited to give a talk and demonstration.
Where's it happening? Youth Club, Parham Village Hall, Main Road, Parham, Woodbridge
What will volunteers do? Make the bird feeders. Show an interest in the environment.
What to wear/bring: A hammer.
What will be provided: Nails, staplegun, wire, wood, peanuts and sunflower seeds.
