What's it about? To involve members of St Benedicts School in a 'Hanging Basket Making' afternoon. The baskets produced will enhance the school environment.

What will volunteers do? The children, with the guidance of CSV Environment staff, will make a range of seasonal hanging baskets using moss, recycled compost and suitable plants.

Sparkling Hanging Baskets
Where? Birmingham

What's it about? The project will provide a number of hanging baskets and brackets for streets in which houses open directly onto the pavements. We will provide brackets, baskets, liners, plants and soil and involve local residents in choosing their plants and planting their own baskets. The project will significantly improve the appearance of these streets and compliment the Sparkling Corners project which will provide litter bins and planters on strategic corners in Sparkbrook.

Reclaiming Confused Spaces

What's it about? We have many large/small confused spaces in Balsall Heath. By 'confused spaces' we mean pieces of land which are not maintained and are regularly dumped on instead.

What's it about? To plant up an area at the rear of our community centre. We will grow plants (including sunflowers, cosmos and monarda) from seed in our new greenhouse.

Wood Storage Bays
Where? Wolverhampton

What's it about? Create storage cupboards to increase the quantity of reclaimed timber and green wood (stakes and unseasoned hardwood logs resulting from other conservation activities) that the wildside activity centre can store for use in future craft and construction projects. The cupboards will be formed by fitting lockable shutters to spaces beneath an existing all-abilities access ramp.
Where's it happening? Canalside wharf, adjacent to Wildside Activity Centre car park, Wolverhampton
What will volunteers do? Cut plywood doors to size with hand or power tools. Fit timber to existing ramp to form guide slots for doors to slide in. Paint/decorate doors.

Reed Bed Improvements

Bird and Bat Box Scheme - Moseley Bog LNR

What's it about? Our Watch Group (8-12)year olds will be making bird and bat boxes in February and putting these up Moseley Bog Local Nature Reserve in March. We hope to monitor the use of these during the year

Sparkling Hanging Baskets

What's it about? The project will provide a number of hanging baskets and brackets for streets in which houses open directly onto the pavements. We will provide brackets, baskets, liners, plants and soil and involve local residents in choosing their plants and planting their own baskets. The project will significantly improve the appearance of these streets and compliment the Sparkling Corners project which will provide litter bins and planters on strategic corners in Sparkbrook.

Hedgelaying
Where? Wolverhampton

What's it about? The traditional craft of hedgelaying is essential to maintain the vitality and biodiversity of a hedge. It involves the partial cutting of selected main stems at an angle of 30-45 degrees. These are then held in place by vertical stakes which may be secured along the top by woven lengths of pliable wood.

Craft Coppice
Where? Wolverhampton

What's it about? Plant up a small area with trees that will be coppiced in the future to supply wood for craft and other related projects, eg. Birch for broom-making, hazel for hurdles (woven panels), ash for tool handles. The practice of coppicing in this country has existed back to the iron age as a sustainable method of small diameter wood production.

What will volunteers do? Prepare ground for tree planting (scrape off weeds, dig hole). Plant trees. Fit tree guards (to prevent damage by rabbits and squirrels). Lay mulch around trees (to suppress competitive grass growth). Make and site a small explanatory sign.

Compost Bin Take-Away
Where? Wolverhampton
When? Monday 7th April 2003
What's it about? Participants will be able to make a compost bin suitable for receiving garden waste, leaves or grass cuttings which they can take away and site in their own garden. Making use of such bins will reduce the amount of organic waste material going to landfill. Some of the material used in the bin construction will be reclaimed timber from a recently dismantled structure on the site.

What will volunteers do? Construct compost bins using hand tools (saw, hammer, drill, screwdriver) or for those that want to, power tools (bench circular saw, cordless drill) from timber and wire netting. Drawings and examples (here is one I made earlier!) will be available for guidance. Copies of a leaflet describing compost bin usage will be provided.
