Harvest Mouse Nest-Box Project
Where? Darlington, Durham
When? 6th January - 24th February 2003
What's it about? The Harvest Mouse was once very common in the North East of England, but due to habitat change has now become extremely rare. Ian Bond of Castle Eden Walkway Nature reserve, Stockton-on-Tees, has instigated a breeding project that will support the reintroduction of the Harvest mouse into the North East. Harrowgate Hill Junior School are involved in this breeding programme. With the help of Bishop Auckland College the school now wishes to design and build Harvest mouse nest-boxes to support the reintroduction programme. The nest-boxes will be built during an after-school club and the children will work with a parent or guardian in a family learning activity. The nest-boxes will then be put up at Castle Eden Walkway Nature reserve and research data will be used by the school children to support their mathematics lessons.

What will volunteers do? The volunteers will be a family members of a child from the school who is undertaking the project. They will work with their family member to design and build a Harvest Mouse Nest-box for use at Castle Eden Walkway Nature Reserve
What to wear/bring: Strong shoes, old clothing to work in
What will be provided: The project will provide the tools and materials required to build the Harvest mouse nest-box. The wood for the nest-box will be pre-sawn at the college after the design stage, and supplied in kit form.

Ant Farm

What's it about? An expert will show us how to construct and maintain an ant farm and observation tank. A trainee at our centre will be responsible for maintaining it, producing information boards and being responsible for talking to visiting school groups about it.

Dry Stone Walling at Whitley Edge

What's it about? We aim to repair Dry Stone Walls; clear old Gorse to promote new growth; and dig on order to create a wetland habitat for birds such as Snipe.
Where's it happening? Whitley Edge, Crow Edge nr
What will volunteers do? Volunteers will carry out Dry Stone Walling, Gorse clearance and Wetland Scrape digging; after leaders have explained the project, the reason for the task and how to do each task.
What to wear/bring: Volunteers need to bring a packed lunch and wear old warm clothing and strong footwear. If possible volunteers should bring waterproofs.
What will be provided: We will provide hot drinks and biscuits at breaks and lunchtime. We will provide trained leaders to demonstrate the work and tool safety. We will provide fully maintained, safe tools and personal protective equipment. We also provide transport.

Troedyrhiw Cemetery Clean Up
Where? Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales - East
When? 17th - 28th February 2003
What's it about? Troedyrhiw Scouts wish to carry out clearance and conservation work at the old Chapel Street cemetery. The site is of great local interest and significance and has been severely neglected over the years. As a result, the cemetery has become increasingly overgrown with such species as Japanese Knotweed and bramble. The troop would like to clear the pathways and manage the encroaching vegetation in order to open this fantastic historical and environmental site.
Where's it happening? Chapel Street Cemetery, Troedyrhiw, Merthyr Tydfil
What will volunteers do? Clear vegetation and coppice existing trees. Patches of bramble will be controlled and path surfaces replenished. Waste (natural) will be retained on site as habitat piles or 'chipped' for path mulch. Nest boxes will be erected on mature trees. The aim is very much a 'natural' area.
What to wear/bring: Old, comfortable footwear, waterproofs, gloves and old clothes.
What will be provided: Gloves, safety equipment, tool tuition, refreshments.

"Hidey Isle" Hide Hedge Planting

What's it about? We need a hedge screen on either side of 20yds or so of path (which also needs building up during the process) leading to a recently completed wildlife watching hide. What will volunteers do? Repair footpath, restore bridge, scrub clearance.
What to wear/bring: Waterproofs, warm clothing, packed lunch.

Sharpham Moor Reserve - Modifications to Allow Grazing
Where? Glastonbury (nr.), Somerset
When? Sunday 2nd March 2003
What's it about? Clearing brambles, pollarding alders and altering ditch alignment to provide water for ponies.
Where's it happening? Sharpham Moor Reserve, Sharpham, Glastonbury (nr.)
What will volunteers do? Dig out ditch with spades, pollard alders using bow saws, clear bramble with slashers and petrol-driven brushcutter. Burn brash.
What to wear/bring: Lunch, waterproof clothing, wellingtons/walking boots.
What will be provided: Training and supervision, hot tea/coffee, tools, first aid box/first aider.

Any restrictions? Under 12s must be accompanied by an adult. No pets.

Improving Access

What's it about? Improve access to Leighton Gorse Wood, removing overgrowth, cutting down nettles and opening up to Greate area the walk through woodland.

What will volunteers do? Open up access to coppice areas. Trim overhanging branches using loppers. Cut down overgrowth and nettles.

Creation of New Pond at Otterbourne

What's it about? Create, design and manage from scratch a natural wildlife pond - for purpose of educating pond wardens and helpers, and monitoring sustainable pond wildlife.

What will volunteers do? Help prepare ground - clear area and construct a 9m x 6m pond as directed by pond wardens steering group management team.

Spring Clean & Litter Pick
Where? St Albans, Hertfordshire
When? 2/03/03
What's it about? For the last 5 years we have done a litter pick in and around St Albans. This year we have chosen Verulamium Park in St Albans.
Where's it happening? Verulamium Park, Meet at the Bandstand nr. The Roman City Wall, St Albans
What will volunteers do? Volunteers of all abilities will pick up litter in Verulamium Park and sort out the rubbish where possible into recyclable and non-recyclable items.
What to wear/bring: Volunteers should wear old clothes that are allowed to get dirty, walking boots or wellies and raincoats.
What will be provided: Earthworks will provide gloves, litter pickers and refreshments.

Stone Common Plott - Path Construction

What's it about? With help from volunteers we hope to improve some of the paths around Stone Common Plott, to ensure better access for all. Areas of path have become muddy and require 'remaking'.

What will volunteers do? Cut back paths which have become overgrown. Create new path edges using timber pegs and timber edging planks.

The Energy Glade Coppicing
Where? Swadlincote, Derbyshire
When? 2nd March 2003
What's it about? The Energy Glade is a new woodland of poplar and willow mix that is being coppiced every 4 years. This project would enable us to involve volunteers in the first coppicing of the final quarter.
Where's it happening? The Energy Glade Woodland, Conkers Waterside, Bath Lane, Moira, Swadlincote
What will volunteers do? Volunteers (Watch Group members) will be coppicing the trees after training and bundling the wood up to be used at other sites for hurdle fence making.
What to wear/bring: Suitable outdoor clothing, sturdy footwear and waterproofs. Snacks and drinks required.
What will be provided: Tools and work gloves.
