Sparkling Hanging Baskets Where? Birmingham, West Midlands When? 3rd March 2003 What's it about? The project will provide a number of hanging baskets and brackets for streets in which houses open directly onto the pavements. We will provide brackets, baskets, liners, plants and soil and involve local residents in choosing their plants and planting their own baskets. The project will significantly improve the appearance of these streets and compliment the Sparkling Corners project which will provide litter bins and planters on strategic corners in Sparkbrook.
Where's it happening? Benton Avenue, Sparkbrook, Birmingham What will volunteers do? They will prepare the baskets ready for composting and planting bulbs, ready for hanging. They will also maintain the baskets.

Plant up containers and paint a mural on the 'breeze-block' walls. Long term maintenance and growing of new plants from collected seeds will also be carried out by volunteers.

Taff Fechan Nature Reserve Project Where? Merthyr, South Wales - East When? 5th March 2003 What's it about? A section of footpath in a local nature reserve has been eroded as a result of recent heavy rains. A group of local residents/volunteers want to repair this section to enable disabled people to gain easier access to all sections of the reserve.
Where's it happening? Taf Fechan Nature Reserve, Merthyr What will volunteers do? Digging out an area of path to allow installation of new section of footpath, edging boards to be installed and held in place using wooden pegs. Area will be resurfaced with hard packed soil.

Regeneration of Allotment Site Where? St Helens, Merseyside When? Saturday 8th March 2003 What's it about? To clear vacant allotments of all rubbish (broken glass, timber and all uncompostable materials) ready for us to start a project with local school children with learning difficulties.

Clear intrusive trees from around marshland pools to help frogs. Cut, coppice and pollard trees to enhance woodland's edge for birds and to create glades for butterflies.
Where's it happening? Fleet Pond Nature Reserve, near Fleet station, Fleet What will volunteers do? Fell saplings, remove scrub, coppice or pollard young trees. At the pools - dig out invasive grass tussocks to create more open water. Bonfire if conditions are favourable.
What to wear/bring: Bring packed lunch if staying all day. Wear old clothes, wellingtons, strong garden gloves.

Creating Shallow Ponds Where? Little Paxton, Cambridgeshire When? Sunday 9th March 2003 What's it about? To extend a series of shallow wet flushes on open ground once used for gravel storage. This habitat attracts invertebrates which is, in turn, food for wagtails, and amphibians.
Where's it happening? Paxton Pits Nature Reserve, Little Paxton What will volunteers do? Scoop away the top few inches of gravel/soil to create one or more shallow 'ponds' or 'puddles' which will remain wet through autumn, winter and spring.
What to wear/bring: Wear boots and warm clothing.
What will be provided: Protective gloves and knee pads. Training in safe use of all tools will be provided before work starts. First Aid kit and qualified first aider.
