Sandras Organic Garden Army
Where? Aberdare, South Wales - East
When? 10th March 2003
What's it about? A group of young people who have been excluded from school have developed an interest in gardening and countryside skills. They are developing a disused plot on our site as an organic garden.
Where's it happening? Fedw Hir, Llwydcoed, Aberdare
What will volunteers do? Prepare plot by digging over, adding organic matter, raking. Sow seeds in trays in polytunnel, design layout, weeding, thinning out, plant out seedlings and fruit bushes. Erect dead hedge to create boundary, fencing off their area.
What to wear/bring: Lunch.
What will be provided: Large hand tools, protective clothing, advice and guidance, refreshments.

St. Bernadette's School Environment Club Garden Improvement

What's it about? To maintain the school's garden by weeding the beds. To plant up small planters with early bedding plants.

Aberhafesp Community Graden Bird Encouragment Project
Where? Newtown (nr.), Mid Wales
When? 10th March 2003
What's it about? To create nest boxes and a bird table for installation in the community garden which has been created to attract wildlife and to provide access for people to experience wildlife at first hand.
Where's it happening? Aberhafesp Primary School, Aberhafesp, Newtown (nr.)
What will volunteers do? Construct nest boxes and a bird table using wood and nails and fix boxes to trees in garden. Supervise and assist children taking part.
What to wear/bring: Protective eyewear (school can provide some), drill, jigsaw, pencils, rulers.
What will be provided: Hammers, saws, materials, risk assessment and safety talk.

Access Work at Acomb Wood

What's it about? Clearing a circular path within the wood, making it accessible for the general public. Also carrying out some re-spacing work.

Sparkling Hanging Baskets
Where? Birmingham, West Midlands
When? 12th March 2003
What's it about? The project will provide a number of hanging baskets and brackets for streets in which houses open directly onto the pavements. We will provide brackets, baskets, liners, plants and soil and involve local residents in choosing their plants and planting their own baskets. The project will significantly improve the appearance of these streets and compliment the Sparkling Corners project which will provide litter bins and planters on strategic corners in Sparkbrook.

What will volunteers do? They will prepare the baskets ready for composting and planting bulbs, ready for hanging. They will also maintain the baskets.

Dragonfly Pond Construction
Where? Inverness, Highland

What's it about? Very simple excavation of a shallow pond to be lined with polythene and turf. The purpose is twofold - for the primary school pupils to follow the colonisation process and pond dip, and also to enhance the visual amenity of popular walk by placing the pond within view of the road.
Where's it happening? close to the railway viaduct on the Baluraid Road, Inverness
What will volunteers do? A mechanical digger will do the bulk of the work. Volunteers will be laying a polythene liner and replacing turf on top and a bit of spade work and tidying.
What to wear/bring: A shovel, wellies, industrial gloves.
What will be provided: Picks, shovels, wheelbarrow, shelter if it rains and a cup of tea.

Sustaining Wild Flower Sites

What's it about? To manage a site at Sandcast Wood for the restoration of wild plants and wildlife habitats.

Silverton School Grounds Morning

What's it about? To check the progress of a newly planted hedge and protect it with tree guards. Prune dogwood in schools grounds. Dig over school vegetable plots and apply organic fertilizer. Put up more nest boxes, and start sowing seeds for spring planting.

What will volunteers do? They will be split into groups to take part in various tasks including planting, pruning and putting up nest boxes.

Planting Native Fruiting Shrubs for Wildlife
Where? St Neots, Cambridgeshire
When? 15th March 2003
What's it about? Plant groups of native fruiting shrubs in the new community 'pocket' nature reserve in St Neots. The shrubs will be valuable as a food source for wildlife, and will help visitors as to appreciate their uses and (for those which are harmful to humans), their dangers.
Where's it happening? Sudbury Meadow, Crosshall Road, Eaton Ford, St Neots
What will volunteers do? Volunteers will plant the shrubs and mulch with bark chips.
What to wear/bring: Wear very stout footwear and clothing suitable for working outdoors in (possibly) cold/wet weather. Gardening gloves should be worn.
What will be provided: Refreshments, spades, wheel barrow, knee pads, first aid kit, instruction in correct planting methods, and correct use of tools.

Any restrictions? Not suitable for children under the age of 12 years. Those between the ages of 12 and 16 years must be accompanied by an adult who takes responsibility for them.

Bird and Bat Box Scheme - Moseley Bog LNR
Where? Birmingham, West Midlands
When? 19th February & 16th March 2003
What's it about? Our Watch Group (8-12)year olds will be making bird and bat boxes in February and putting these up Moseley Bog Local Nature Reserve in March. We hope to monitor the use of these during the year
Where's it happening? Moseley Bog Local Nature Reserve, Yardley Wood Road, Moseley, Birmingham
What will volunteers do? Help make the bird and bat boxes and then help put them up, record locations with photographs and GPS system.
What to wear/bring: Warm, waterproof and protective clothing.
What will be provided: Tools, materials, supervision and education information.

Any restrictions? The bird and bat box making will be accessible to wheelchair users but access to Moseley Bog is currently restricted. We are looking for 8-12 year olds, but younger children can join if accompanied by parents. We need to know in advance to ensure that safe supervision levels can be maintained.

What's it about? Renewing gateposts, rehanging gate, renewing fence, planting hedges on Upper Quarry Ground which is to become an orchard/public open space.

Allotment Revitalisation

What's it about? Taking a derelict allotment plot and making it productive for vegetables and attractive for wildlife. We have already cleared rubbish and started digging beds.

What will volunteers do? Help dig beds, saw and nail wood to make raised beds and a cold frame. In future, to help with adding wildlife features and cultivating veg.

Street Heath Reserve - Improving Butterfly Glades

What's it about? Eliminating bramble and birch regrowth from glades to encourage more flora beneficial as food plants for butterflies and caterpillars.

What will volunteers do? Cut bramble with slashers, clear birch regrowth with bow saws and loppers. Move cut trunks to form drinking platforms for grazing ponies.

Whitbread Duck Nesting Raft
Where? Welshpool, Mid Wales

What's it about? Members of the Pontbren families to construct a raft and anchor it in a pool on one of the farms ready for ducks to nest on safely.
Where's it happening? Melingrug, Llanfair Caereinion, Welshpool
What will volunteers do? Build a raft, plant rushes on it, secure a nesting box, and anchor the raft in a pool. Also look out for and try to identify birds in the area.
