When? 17th March 2003
What's it about? The group would like to plant trees in the Close to attract wildlife which would add interest for the residents, as many of them are keen on attracting birds to the Close. The trees have been chosen because of their all year round interest, manageable size and value to wildlife.
Where's it happening? Haven Close, Sheltered Accommodation, Merthyr Tydfil
What will volunteers do? Help site and plant/stake trees and ensure they are watered etc. in their first few weeks.
What to wear/bring: Strong, sensible footwear and old clothes. Waterproofs might be a good idea!
What will be provided: Gloves, tools etc.

Wildlife Haven

Healthy Harvest Café
Where? Nottingham, Nottinghamshire
When? Tuesday from 21st Jan - 18th March 2003
What's it about? Ecoworks has a catering trailer and a large allotment site where we grow lots of organic food. We work with a variety of disadvantaged group and we want to be able to park the catering trailer on the allotment site so that meals can be created using the freshly picked produce and served to our volunteers and garden project workers. We need to erect some gates and remove a short portion of the allotment hedge in order to achieve this end.
Where's it happening? Hungerhill allotment site, St Anns, Nottingham
What will volunteers do? Work on constructing gates out of wood and clearing the ground and removing the hedge, making cups of tea and toast will be essential.
What to wear/bring: Warm and durable clothing, packed lunch

General Cemetery Sheffield - Footpath Creation

What's it about? To build a footpath in Sheffield general cemetery to make it accessible for all.

What will volunteers do? Take part in practical conservation work, creating a footpath using bark chippings and logs as revetment.

Craft Coppice
Where? Wolverhampton, West Midlands

What's it about? Plant up a small area with trees that will be coppiced in the future to supply wood for craft and other related projects, eg. Birch for broom-making, hazel for hurdles (woven panels), ash for tool handles. The practice of coppicing in this country has existed back to the iron age as a sustainable method of small diameter wood production.
Where's it happening? Boundary Way Community Garden, Boundary Way Allotments, Merry Hill, Wolverhampton
What will volunteers do? Prepare ground for tree planting (scrape off weeds, dig hole). Plant trees. Fit tree guards (to prevent damage by rabbits and squirrels). Lay mulch around trees (to suppress competitive grass growth). Make and site a small explanatory sign.
What to wear/bring: Old clothes, packed lunch.
What will be provided: Training/supervision, refreshments.

Sparkling Hanging Baskets
Where? Birmingham, West Midlands
When? 19th March 2003
What's it about? The project will provide a number of hanging baskets and brackets for streets in which houses open directly onto the pavements. We will provide brackets, baskets, liners, plants and soil and involve local residents in choosing their plants and planting their own baskets. The project will significantly improve the appearance of these streets and compliment the Sparkling Corners project which will provide litter bins and planters on strategic corners in Sparkbrook.

Path Priorities

What's it about? There is a small community woodland in the school grounds with a path encircling it. Last year we cut back the vegetation to the original edge but this was a temporary solution. Working with other groups, we now intend to completely reconstruct the path.

Willow Sculptur Renovations

What's it about? The introduction of a new willow species to develop willow sculptures which are an integral part of our playground but which have unfortunately succumbed to rust. They provide not only a super natural habitat for wildlife, but also a great natural play area.

What will volunteers do? Remove dead material from the structures. Replace these with new willow wands which will be woven into the existing live material. These will then be tied into place and watered.

Woodland and Wetlands Survey - Caersws Primary School

What's it about? Engage key stage 2 children in an exploratory survey of two natural habitats, woodlands and wetlands, as part of an ecological study project with the Montgomeryshire Wildlife Trust.
Where's it happening? Caersws Primary School, Caersws, Newtown
What will volunteers do? Carry out a stream dipping activity to assess the health and physical features of the wetland. They will also be collecting minibeasts to assess the ecological health of the woodland and wetland. This information will be shared with the Wildlife Trust and used to help volunteers understand how to increase the wildlife value of these habitats.
What to wear/bring: Wellies, waterproof clothing, pens, pencils, clipboards, reference texts (keys & identification guides).

Help a Hampshire Hedge

What's it about? The work covering the weekend will be the coppicing, planting and pruning within the many hedgerows.
Where's it happening? Turgis Court Farm, Stratfield Turgis, Sherfield on Loddon Nr
What will volunteers do? The volunteers will help out with managing some of the hedgerow on the Turgis Court Site, with the purpose of rejuvenating them to increase their visual and wildlife appeal.

A Cleaner Braid Burn - It's In Your Hands

What's it about? Braidburn Valley Park is a local community park serving a range of neighbourhoods in south Edinburgh. The park is bisected by the Braid Burn (river) which, unfortunately, has become unsightly and a danger to playing children and dogs, with litter. The aim of the Friends of Braidburn Valley Park community group (which has been established for nearly a year) is to ask volunteers to help clean up the burn and park. As well as increasing the amenity of the site, it is hoped that this will also raise awareness about the park, and encourage new people to use it, and to undertake further voluntary work with the Group.

Sunshine for Stockingford

What's it about? To clear the boundaries of the allotments of litter, weeds and general rubbish. The rubbish will then be disposed of and 'green' waste will be composted. We would also purchase seeds of perennial and bedding plants to grow on in order to make the area surrounding the allotments far brighter on the eye. A small number of flowering shrubs would also be planted, from these cuttings would be taken to 'grow' the number available in the area. This would then transform the area for the community, the allotment holders and those that visit 'our shed' to purchase fruit and vegetables and bring a little sunshine to Stockingford!

Millennium Link Scottish Litter Challenge 2003

What's it about? The Challenge is run as a partnership between The Waterways Trust Scotland, Keep Scotland Beautiful and British Waterways. The aim of the Challenge is to clean up the towpaths of the entire length of the Forth & Clyde and Union canals, all the way from Tollcross in Edinburgh to the West Coast (68 miles!) with the help of 1000 plus volunteers.
Where's it happening? Edinburgh to the West Coast, Edinburgh
What will volunteers do? Clean up litter from the towpath of the canals. Volunteers will be instructed NOT to attempt to remove items of litter from the water itself.
What to wear/bring: Rainproof clothing and shoes, gloves and own refreshments although some refreshments may be provided. We are in negotiations with various parties to organise bottled water and snacks, etc.
What will be provided: Litter pick tools (tools to pick up litter without bending or touching it by hand), plastic rubbish bags, skips, free entry raffle prizes, safety instruction and equipment, on-site full-time canal staff.
