Bumper Beach Clean and Action Earth Launch Where? Milford Haven (nr.), West Wales When? Tuesday 31st December 2002 What's it about? To get people out of the house after Christmas, clean the marine & general litter from the local beach. Plan other Action Earth events around a bonfire with hot soup etc!!
Where's it happening? Burton Beach, Burton Ferry, Milford Haven (nr.) What will volunteers do? Remove litter blown onto foreshore during winter storms. Record types of litter, separate for disposal eg bagging & collection or burning!

Help the Hedge Where? Leeds, West Yorkshire When? 1st January 2003 What's it about? Obtain some additional tools to facilitate engaging fellow allotments holders to trim our boundary hedge - the inside and all the bits the tractor can't reach. Keep it more 'person'-proof. Also tidy up accumulated litter in hedge bottom. Foster plotholder community spirit.
Where's it happening? Woodhouse Moor (A) Allotments, junction Hyde Park Road/Moorland Road, Leeds What will volunteers do? Use shears, loppers etc. to cut parts of the hedge that cannot be reached by tractor. Collect windblown and thrown litter from hedge bottom.

Rustle Down The Wind Where? Shearbrow, Lancashire When? 4th January 2003 What's it about? The project was suggested by local children. The success of the herb garden prompted the idea of an area within the local community garden which will be planted with wild grasses that add different noises of rustling to the olfactory part of the community garden. The grasses will be chosen for their ability to create noise in the wind and colour and will enhance the area. The children, who are a diverse group and multi cultural, will be planting and deciding where to place them to create a most pleasing effect to people who have little or no eyesight and will be used as an educational site.

Hedge Laying for Wildlife Where? Little Paxton, Cambridgeshire When? Sunday 5th January 2003 What's it about? To lay several sections of an overgrown hedge on the Ouse Valley Way Long Distance Footpath. The aim is to transform the tall sparse hedge into a thick, sprawling hedge suitable for a range of wildlife. This will enhance the enjoyment of the thousands of walkers who use the OVW each year.
Where's it happening? Ouse Valley Way, Little Paxton What will volunteers do? Remove and burn brash as it is cut from the hedge by qualified chain saw operatives. Smaller bushes will be cut by volunteers (after on-site training). Hand tools (bow saws and loppers) will be used.
What to wear/bring: Wear boots or stout shoes, and warm clothing.
What will be provided: Gloves, hard hats, all tools needed and instruction in their safe use. Hot tea and coffee and biscuits. First aid.

Bird Boxes for the Pickmere Informal Recreational Open Space Where? Pickmere, Cheshire When? Sunday 5th January 2003 What's it about? In 2000, Pickmere was fortunate enough to acquire a derelict but beautiful site adjoining the Mere. The village formed the Conservation Group to clear it and have already planted over 1000 trees. Work is ongoing. We would now like to put up bird boxes.
Where's it happening? Pickmere Informal Recreational Open Space, Mere Lane, Pickmere What will volunteers do? Following the instructions of the Countryside Ranger, volunteers will make the boxes and the more able will mount them on trees.

Improving Marsh Harrier Breeding Site Where? Westhay, Somerset When? Saturday 5th January 2003 What's it about? Improve habitat to encourage return of marsh harriers, which bred 1995-2000, by some tree thinning and selective clearing of reed beds.
Where's it happening? Westhay Heath Nature Reserve, Westhay What will volunteers do? Remove specified trees with bowsaws, trimming off brash and stacking 2m length timbers. Clearing reed patches and raking off cut reed.
