Barlby Ponds Reedbed Management Where? Selby, North Yorkshire When? 18th February 2003 What's it about? The reedbed will be managed by removing encroaching vegetation to prevent the pond being 'choked-up'. Previous work at this site has resulted in it becoming a well-used nesting site for waterfowl.
Where's it happening? Barlby Ponds, Barlby, Selby What will volunteers do? Volunteers will be able to help both in the pond and on the banks as they wish. They will be able to help uprooting reeds, dragging them to the banks of the pond and removing them from the water into piles on the sides.

The traditional craft of hedgelaying is essential to maintain the vitality and biodiversity of a hedge. It involves the partial cutting of selected main stems at an angle of 30-45 degrees. These are then held in place by vertical stakes which may be secured along the top by woven lengths of pliable wood.

MCS Adopt-a-Beach at Pagham Harbour Where? Pagham (nr.), West Sussex When? Sunday 23rd February 2003 What's it about? The Pagham & West Sussex WCA has adopted the beach at Pagham Harbour Local Nature Reserve. For over a decade we have been organising beach cleans and have gained a certificate of thanks from the district council. However, we need to provide more assistance for the volunteers who turn up to help. Specifically, we need to purchase litter picks to enable litter to be picked up without either bending down or using hands. It is particularly important for youngsters not to handle litter for safety reasons.
Where's it happening? Pagham Harbour Local Nature Reserve, Pagham (nr.) What will volunteers do? The volunteers will collect and record litter found on the tide line.
What to wear/bring: Volunteers need to bring warm, waterproof clothing, stout shoes, gloves and a mug.
What will be provided: Gloves for those who have none, black plastic bags, recording forms, clip-boards and pencils, a first aid kit, safety guidance, refreshments, and also public liability insurance.
